Military Duty
Decree n. 226 of 23 August 2004 (G.U. n. 204 of 23/8/2004), calls for, as of January 2005, the early suspension of obligatory military service and the establishment of professional military service.
The last young men called to the draft were those born before December 31, 1985.
By the year 2007, an army only composed of volunteers, open to women, will be formed.
The Military Districts and the Italian Comuni of residency will send to the young men who abided to the military regulation on conscription the "Fogli di Congedo Illimitato". The Consulate General of New York will distribute them to the addresses.
Those who are prosecuted for the crime of renitenza or because they did not respond to the call to the army will receive information and support from the Consulate General to regularize their position.
Italian citizens who intend to repatriate in order to perform voluntary military service are not eligible for the benefits stated in decree 433/66, which governs repatriation procedures at the expense of the Treasury for the sole purpose of obligatory military service.
Please note: for the Military Duty Service it is necessary to make an appointment. To set the appointment, please call (973) 643 1448 ext. 223.
