The Consulate has a very limited staff.
Employees are asked to either assist the public during opening hours or to handle paperwork. If they were to also directly take phone calls from the public (about 20.000 people refer to this office), your own application for passport, assistance, citizenship and the like would not make any progress.
So we kindly ask you, unless you are calling for an emergency, to prefer fax and email over the phone.
In case you do have to phone, leave a message with your name and number and the reason for your call - you will be called back. Please avoid requests of general information already available on this website.
No. The Consulate does not have a Visa office. Please refer to the Consulate General of Italy in New York (www.consnewyork.esteri.it).
Appointments are necessary for Legal Assistance and for Naval Assistance: contact 973 643 1448 or write to consolato.newark@esteri.it.
Appointments are also necessary for applications with regard to Italian Citizenship through Marriage ( they are not given for any other Italian citizenship application!): contact 973 643 1448 or write to consolato.newark@esteri.it.
Only the appointments that have been confirmed with the staff are valid.
For all other services appointments are not necessary and the public is received in order of appearance.

I have completed my application. How long do I have to wait now before I can be an Italian citizen?
Due to the enormous number of applications all over the world, the time period required for obtaining Italian citizenship ( all applications are ultimately processed by Government authorities in Italy) has greatly increased over the last few years.
In fact, the waiting time for obtaining citizenship with a fully completed application filed at this office is currently found to be between two and three years.

I was told by the staff of the Vice Consulate that my citizenship request was completed more than one year ago. I have not heard back since. Should I contact the Vice Consulate to know what's going on?
While we understand the applicants' anticipation to become Italian citizens, it should be clear that the office processes hundreds of citizenship applications, and that they are prioritised exclusively in the order in which they were received and completed. Emails, phone calls, personal visits and so forth do not alter the unfortunate fact that there is a very long line of people who apply every day for Italian citizenship every day. All new applications enter that line at the very end - no exceptions.
The office contacts applicants every time information or documents are needed. If you are an applicant and have not been contacted since the completion of your application, please take our word that your application is being processed. If we need to contact you in order to request more data or perhaps to announce that your request has been successfully finalised, we will invariably do so.
Please understand also you will have to wait for your turn not only for your application to be processed, but to be contacted by the office when many applicants need to be contacted in the same period.
Do not waste your time asking us for an 'update' on your application: if any relevant fact concerning your application should become evident, you will be notified as soon as your turn comes. There is therefore no need to 'check' on the application. Thank you for your cooperation!
